Well-wishers hold candles in celebration of revered Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej's birthday at the city hall in Samut Prakan December 5, 2008. Thailand marked the king's birthday on Friday in a solemn mood, concerned for the health of the ageing monarch and worried as well over the country's debilitating political deadlock. King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who turned 81 on December 5, failed to deliver his annual birthday eve address at a time when many Thais had been looking to him to issue a call for unity after protests by People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) activists shut down Bangkok's main airport for a week. Miss Thailand 2008 and fellow contestents bid farewell to foreign tourists at Suvarnabhumi International Airport on Friday 5th December 2008. The airport was closed for eight days after being taken over by the 'People's Alliance for Democracy' an anti-government group. An estimated 300,000 tourists were left stranded in Thailand. Suvarnabhumi Airport resumes full service

Suvarnabhumi airport has resumed full operation at 11am Friday after the protesters led by the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) occupied the airport and disrupted its operation for about a week in a bid to topple the government. Acting Transport Minister Santi Promphat, pictured center, together with officials from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) inspected Suvarnabhumi’s readiness.
